In Memoriam

Sanae Mori 9/11/2001

On a school trip to Paris
you slept upon my shoulder
and I dared not move for hours
sleepy Sanae, sat up too late again
meeting some deadline.

On every television, planes
demolish buildings endlessly
and we don't understand.

At Notre Dame we waited at day's end
everyone back but Sanae
at last you came, sated with Monet –
we all relaxed then
and began the journey home.

Still on our screens tall buildings
devour planes repeatedly
still we don't understand.

Neat hair, smart suit, brisk walk
you looked so fine when you came back
to visit us one day -
good student Sanae doing well
at university.

Again and again the planes,
the buildings,
our failure to understand.

We heard about your training course at WTC –
rumours, then doubts, then lastly
a hopeless certainty -
Sanae was there - she's missing -
she will not be found.

Ever and ever again we'll see
those planes, those buildings
but we'll never understand.

Of Greek Proportions

Upon hearing
the news
of a friend's death

two of his children
swept to sea
he saved one
and drowned
with the other

his loved ones stunned
into submission
and dreams of sleep

I seek refuge
turn to pen
and paper

the terrible sun
still shines
on that Portugal beach

Post Script

Tokyo, December, 2. 2001

Dear ISSE people:

My daughter, Sanae (27 years old), was a victim of that horrible terrorism to the World Trade Center in New York on September 11th during her business trip to New York. Despite the great efforts of everyone involved, my daughter is still "missing. "

More than two months have passed since the incident. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for your heartfelt words and sympathy, which are a great encouragement to my family during this time.

On the occasion of the memorial service held in New York on October 28 [2001], we have received 'a tiny pot to commemorate Sanae'. Taking that as a break we held a "Memorial Service for Sanae" for her family and close friends a few days ago.

We are indeed saddened and so hard to believe what happened. However, we must accept this situation as fact, and what has already happened. Therefore we have made a decision to live positively for the future, instead of grieving for the past forever. We believe this will be the best for Sanae's soul. Even though she had lived for only twenty-seven years, we believe Sanae had a challenging and most fulfilling life.

Again, our family wishes to express our deepest appreciation to you for all your warm thoughts and encouragement. Thank you for your many kindnesses.

Sincerely,

Mr and Mrs Mori
